Drawings exercise

We used this technique with the younger age groups (1st or 2nd classes) to encourage their communication in ways other than the verbal or written forms. We asked each child to draw a picture of ‘who you are and what is important to you’. Members of the research team worked with small groups of children while they were drawing, and then had a brief discussion with each child about their picture. The pictures were then taken away to be scanned and copied and were returned to the children at a later date.

Group discussion

This technique was used with the younger age groups (1st or 2nd classes), partly as an icebreaker activity. Each researcher worked with a small group of children (4-6 children) and led a discussion on the topic of ‘moving house.’ The brainstorming method was used, whereby children were encouraged to ‘brainstorm’ on the topic, and discussion followed afterwards. Each group produced a poster which reflected in words and sketches the topics that came up.
