MIGRANT CHILDREN PROJECT

Photography exercise

The older children who were in fifth or sixth class took part in this activity.

We visited the children in their classroom twice to carry out this activity. In the first visit (after we had got written permission from the childrens' parents/guardians to take part in the activity) we gave the children disposable cameras and asked them to take photographs (outside school-time), on the theme the people, places and things that are important to me . We showed all the children how to use the cameras (by taking a test photo in the classroom) and told them about the ‘rules' of taking photos (we gave each child a leaflet that explained these).

Lots of children took part in the activity, we collected 70 cameras, this produced nearly 1,500 photographs! We returned the photographs were to all the children. We then asked each child to choose their favourite photograph to stick into a scrapbook (entitled ‘My Life'). While they were doing this we talked to each child about their choices and asked each child to write a little about each photo.
