Photography exercise
This was carried out with the older aged children (10-12 years old).
We wanted to use photography to encourage children to communicate and express themselves in ways that emphasised non-verbal and non-written texts and media. The exercise required two hour long visits to classrooms. It entailed providing children with disposable cameras and asking them to take photographs (outside school-time), on the theme ‘the people, places and things that are important to me’. The children were shown how to use the cameras and guidance about the ethics of photograph taking (where, when, of who, the importance of gaining consent etc.). These issues were also addressed in an explanatory leaflet.
The cameras (in total 70) were picked up, developed and (once their content was recorded) photographs were returned to the children. Children were then asked to choose their favourites to stick into a scrapbook (entitled ‘My Life’). While doing this the Migrant Children project team talked to each child about their choices and asked each child to write a little about each photo.
