HEA targeted initiative – questions to be addressed.

Objectives:

 Ø      to explore issues connected with access to third-level institutions in Ireland for full status refugees, programme refugees and other persons with leave to remain.

Ø      to identify obstacles and opportunities

Ø      to develop appropriate pilot proposals to facilitate greater access

  • Ø      Profile of refugee community and educational needs - identify individuals and organisations – top-down and bottom-up approaches needed

  • Ø      Existing Irish best practice – programmes for Traveller community and other marginalised individuals and communities
  • Ø      International literature review and comparisons of best practice
  • Ø      Towards pilot access programmes
  • Ø      ‘Refugee-proofing’ of third-level educational system: anti-discrimination and pro-integration measures - Specific support systems needed – language, creche, special needs, intercultural awareness programmes, pilot programmes in Irish studies/Irish society this may come at a later stage.
